The Doctor is able to confirm that he is really talking to the Black Guardian at the end by asking about Astra, and pointing out that, as part of the key, if it were to be kept assembled, she would be trapped within. ![]() It's not a full confirmation, but the Black Guardian himself actually gives us the best indication that the White Guardian was able to fix things while the Key was assembled. His fellow Time Lord Romana, find themselves sucked into a botched Sent to seek out the Key To Time by the White Guardian, the Doctor and SEASON SIXTEEN The Ribos Operation 9/2/78 9/23/78 4 Probably one of the stronger corroborations is from a book titled The Doctor Who Programme Guide by Jean Marc Lofficier (I was unable to find the actual episode excerpt in google books, this is from a synopsis on this site): The Doctor is enlisted by the White Guardian to find the six separate segments of the object through time and space, and assigned a Time Lady companion, Romana, to help. ![]() If you really want to break out the big guns, you can argue that Season 16, during Tom Baker's tenure, was the longest story in the show's history, running for twenty-six episodes. Why and how and what the thing does isn't explained just yet, but the Black Guardian apparently wants it too. It will also thwart the plans of the fearsome Black Guardian!Ī godlike guy in a casual white suit, the White Guardian, interrupts the Doctor's puttering around in the TARDIS to give him a quest: find all six segments of the Key To Time. Once assembled, the Key will allow the Guardian to restore balance and good to a universe that is descending into evil and chaos. The six segments of the Key to Time, currently disguised and scattered throughout the cosmos, need to be brought together. The Doctor and K-9 Mark 2 are sent on a mission by the immensely powerful White Guardian. Doctor, at all costs, you must prevent that. In order to maintain the universal balance, there is also a Black Guardian, and he also requires the Key to Time, but for a different purpose. I am not fully aware of what is considered accepted canon sources in the Who'verse, but everything that I can find corroborates that it is the White Guardian that sets the doctor the task originally.įrom a transcript of the show (Admittedly the Guardian could be lying): ** Only today, as I was researching this question, did I learn that "Cessair," like several the villainess's other identities, is the name of a Celtic heroine/goddess. My ultimate question is whether there is there any evidence for this idea in the stories? Or is this just a product of people misunderstanding a somewhat subtle plot? However, in a number of online discussions of the season-long plot, I have seen the suggestion that the White Guardian really did put the Doctor on the job, and that he completed his adjustments to correct the coming chaos in spacetime while the Key was complete, before it was nearly stolen by the Black Guardian. This explains, for example, the curious fact that Cessair of Diplos had captured one of the segments and brought it to the Doctor's favorite planet it was there waiting for him to swing by and claim it. So the Doctor, Cessair, and the Shadow were all working for the same power, knowingly of not. My inference, from the first time I saw the stories, was that the whole storyline was entirely the work of the Black Guardian, that the figure who gave the Doctor his assignment in the first story was not the White Guardian, but again the Black in disguise. You come in quest of a key.") At the end, with Shadow, in death, calls out to his master for help, but the Black Guardian disguises himself as the White and goes to claim the complete Key to Time from the Doctor and Romana. In the last story, "The Armageddon Factor," the main villain, the Shadow, makes no attempt to hide the fact that he is a servant of the Black Guardian, and that he has been waiting for the Doctor to arrive with the first five segments of the Key. The natural conclusion is that she is an agent of the Black Guardian, who is seeking the key. And Cessair knows both how to use the segment's shape-changing powers to alter her appearance, and that the Doctor is there looking for the segment. ![]() The third story, "The Stones of Blood," begins with a warning voice: "Beware of the Black Guardian," which is the first mention of the Guardians since Romana's arrival in "The Ribos Operation." The Doctor then visits contemporary Earth, where the third segment has been held by the alien criminal Cessair** of Diplos, having brought it there thousands of years earlier. However, he is not the only person looking for the pieces. In the "Key to Time" epic, covering the whole of season sixteen of Doctor Who, the Doctor is sent on a mission to retrieve the six pieces of the Key, ostensibly by the White Guardian. ![]() Interestingly, it syncs with other DJs and offers advice to make better mixes.ĭownload Virtual DJ for: Windows | macOS CeciliaĬecilia is a very simple automatic audio mixer. A hydronic radiant floor heating system needs a much more detailed installation process, with the pipes having to be guided through the floor individually.īut the operating cost for a hydronic radiant floor heating system is less than its electric counterpart. If you opt for a larger boiler, the price can double or even triple.Īn electric radiant heating system is cheaper to install because it can be installed as a jigsaw puzzle, with ready-made mats able to be put in place. This can set you back anywhere around $1,500. With a hydronic floor heating system, there is an additional cost of the water heater. ![]() Hydronic floor heating costs, on the other hand, can be $13 per square foot for a single room and $14,000 to $40,000 for a full house. For the whole house, the cost can be in the range of $20,000 to $36,000, depending on your location, exact home features, and service provider. This is not only due to the actual components being expensive but also due to the laborious installation process.Įven though there are three main types of radiant floor heating systems, as discussed above, the insulation materials, pipe material, and type of floor can fluctuate the costs very much.Īccording to Fixr, for electric radiant floor heating systems, the national average for single room installation stands at around $11 per square foot. These systems generally tend to be a bit on the higher side of the cost scale. This system is thus not a very efficient method. The result is that it loses its temperature very quickly, necessitating the constant use of the furnace, thus consuming more energy. An alternative is to use solar air heaters, but the obvious disadvantage is that they can only be used during the day.Ī drawback of air heated radiant flooring is that air does not hold heat very well. A furnace is used to heat the air and then circulate it through the piping networks, similar to how it is channeled through ducts in a ducted heating system. As opposed to the other two types, air heated flooring uses hot air channeled through tubes embedded underneath the floor. The third type of radiant floor heating, albeit a less common one, is air floor heating. Consult your installation professional to choose the best system for your needs. The exact choice for which one to go for depends on a lot of factors. The radiation characteristic and the water temperature for both these pipes can vary. A popular option is PEX, a type of plastic, or EPDM, a type of rubber. The pipes to carry water are made of different materials. The water used in a hydronic radiant floor heating system is separate from the water which you use for other household needs, and there is no mixing between the two of them. ![]() These pipes are connected to a hot water boiler and a pump, which keeps on circulating the hot water in this closed system. This type of system is called a hydronic heating system. The other type of floor heating is through hot water pipes embedded underneath the floor, like a geothermal heating system. Advanced thermostats can even give scheduling capabilities, allowing you to run the heating system at specific times of the day. ![]() The temperature of the wires, and consequently the room, can be changed through a thermostat controller. Some electric systems can also be used in the washroom since they are waterproof. The heat then transfers through the floor and heats up the room.Įlectric systems usually come in square tiles, which can be fit together like a big jigsaw puzzle. ![]() These electric wires heat up when electricity is passed through them. Nevertheless, you may still love the consistent heat!Īn electric radiant floor heating system consists of electric wires running under the floor surface. So, if you are someone who loves to huddle around a heater and get a cozy spot, you might find a radiant heating system just a bit different to your taste. In the sense that it does not heat from a direct flame, like a space heater, neither does it blow hot air like a furnace. The heat you feel is due to infrared radiation.Īs compared to other traditional heating systems, radiant heating is not a direct form of heating. If you are still confused about what is radiant heating, think of when you place your hand near a hot metal surface, and can feel the warmth even though you aren’t touching it. These pipes or wires can be embedded in floors, walls, or even ceilings. It does so by delivering heat directly from a hot surface, such as resistive wires or hot water pipes, to the indoor air. Radiant heating systems provide heat to the indoor environment using infrared radiation.
